CELPIP scores explained: levels 1 to 12, CLB, and the validity its own site gives twice

A CELPIP level is a Canadian Language Benchmark: CELPIP 7 is CLB 7, CELPIP 9 is CLB 9, and so on up to 12. The one exception is the bottom, where CELPIP 2 covers CLB 1 and 2. You get a separate level for each skill, never an overall pass or fail, and the organisation reading your scores decides what is enough.

Everything below was read on 15 October 2026 on celpip.ca (its test format, results and citizenship pages) and on IRCC's Express Entry language page on canada.ca. One thing on celpip.ca does not agree with itself: the format page says scores are valid for two years, the results page says five. For Canadian immigration it is IRCC's rule that counts, and it is neither of those, as the last section shows.

Two tests: CELPIP-General and CELPIP-General LS

CELPIP-General tests all four skills in one sitting of about 2 hours 50 minutes, with no separate speaking day. It is the one IRCC requires for Express Entry. celpip.ca lists it at $299 plus applicable taxes.

CELPIP-General LS tests only listening and speaking, in about 1 hour 10 minutes, and celpip.ca says it is used for Canadian citizenship applications. It is listed at $199 plus applicable taxes. Citizenship only assesses speaking and listening, so the four-skill test costs $100 more for two scores the citizenship file does not use.

  • Listening38 questions, 46–55 minutes6 parts, from problem solving to viewpoints
  • Reading38 questions, 43–56 minutesGeneral only
  • Writing2 tasks, 53 minutesan email and a survey response; General only
  • Speaking8 tasks, 15 minutesfrom giving advice to describing an unusual situation

The levels, and what they equal

celpip.ca publishes one table that maps each CELPIP level to CLB, to CEFR and to Australia's Department of Home Affairs levels. The CLB column is the one Canadian programmes use, and it matches CELPIP level for level.

The CEFR column surprises people: CELPIP maps level 4, the citizenship threshold, to A2, and B1 starts at level 5. Levels 7 to 9 are all B2, and 10 and 11 are both C1. Levels 0 and 1 mean there was not enough to assess, celpip.ca's raw-score charts mark the lowest listening and reading band M (0 to 7 of 38), and NA means you did not sit that component.

  • CELPIP 12CLB 12 · C2expert proficiency in high-stakes contexts
  • CELPIP 10–11CLB 10–11 · C1
  • CELPIP 7–9CLB 7–9 · B27 in every skill is Australia's 'Competent English'
  • CELPIP 5–6CLB 5–6 · B15 in every skill is Australia's 'Vocational English'
  • CELPIP 3–4CLB 3–4 · A24 is 'adequate proficiency for daily life activities'
  • CELPIP 2CLB 1–2 · A1
  • CELPIP 0–1insufficient information to assess

How many questions you need right

Listening and reading are marked by computer, right or wrong, and a blank counts as wrong. celpip.ca publishes an example chart of raw scores out of 38 and says the cut points move slightly between test forms because harder versions are equated differently. Both tests also contain unscored trial questions that look exactly like the real ones, so there is no point guessing which to skip.

Approximately, in listening: 35–38 right is level 10–12, 30–33 is 8, 27–31 is 7, 22–28 is 6, 17–23 is 5 and 11–18 is 4. In reading: 33–38 is 10–12, 28–31 is 8, 24–28 is 7, 19–25 is 6, 15–20 is 5 and 10–16 is 4. The overlapping ranges are celpip.ca's own; they are what equating looks like.

Speaking and writing are rated by people, on four dimensions each: content and coherence, vocabulary, listenability (readability for writing), and task fulfilment, which includes tone and length. Each speaking performance is rated by three to five raters and each writing performance by four to six, working independently; when they disagree, a benchmark rater is assigned.

Results, and asking for a re-evaluation

Scores appear in your CELPIP account 2 to 4 business days after the test, and the PDF you download there is the official report: celpip.ca says paper reports have been discontinued. The scores stay viewable in the account for five years from the test date.

You can ask for a re-evaluation of some or all components within six months of the test, once per component. You pay when you apply, the fee for a component is refunded if its level changes, and the answer takes about one to two weeks. celpip.ca's own advice is that listening and reading re-evaluations are unlikely to change anything, because those are computer-marked; it is speaking and writing where a second look can move a level.

How long a CELPIP result lasts, and the rule that actually applies

celpip.ca's format and scoring page says scores are valid for two years from the date your score report is issued. Its results page, under the same table, says valid for five years. We read both on 15 October 2026 and report them as written.

For Canada, the receiving rule is IRCC's, and it depends on what you are applying for. Express Entry: IRCC says results must be less than 2 years old both when you complete your profile and when you submit your permanent residence application. Citizenship: IRCC asks for a copy of your results even if they're expired, provided they meet its scores, as our guide to Canadian citizenship language proof sets out.

What level each Canadian programme asks for

From IRCC's Express Entry language page, read 15 October 2026. These are minimums; points for ranking in the pool rise with higher levels. How the same CLB looks on IELTS and PTE Core is in CELPIP, IELTS or PTE Core for Canada.

Our reading: the jump that most often matters is from 6 to 7, because CLB 7 in every skill is the floor for the Federal Skilled Worker Program. Speaking and writing are the two skills raters score, and the two most candidates can move with practice against a real listener.

  • Citizenship (ages 18–54)CELPIP 4 in listening and speakingGeneral LS is enough
  • Federal Skilled WorkerCLB 7 in all four skills
  • Canadian Experience Class, TEER 0 or 1CLB 7 in all four skills
  • Canadian Experience Class, TEER 2 or 3CLB 5 in all four skills
  • Federal Skilled TradesCLB 5 speaking and listening, CLB 4 reading and writing

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Booking CELPIP-General LS for Express Entry.

    Booking CELPIP-General, the four-skill test.

IRCC's Express Entry page says you must take the CELPIP-General test; LS has no reading or writing scores.

  • Paying for the four-skill test when you only need citizenship.

Taking CELPIP-General LS at $199 instead of $299.

Citizenship assesses listening and speaking only, and celpip.ca says the LS test is used for citizenship applications.

  • Requesting a listening or reading re-evaluation after a near miss.

Spending the fee on speaking or writing, if anything.

celpip.ca says listening and reading are computer-rated and a re-evaluation is unlikely to change those scores.

  • Trusting a five-year validity for Express Entry.

Checking your report is under two years old at profile and at application.

IRCC's own Express Entry rule is less than 2 years old, whatever a score report page says.

Questions

What CLB level is CELPIP 7?

CLB 7. celpip.ca's score table maps CELPIP levels to CLB one-to-one from 3 to 12; only CELPIP 2 covers two benchmarks, CLB 1 and 2. The same table places CELPIP 7, 8 and 9 at CEFR B2. Read 15 October 2026.

How long is a CELPIP score valid?

celpip.ca gives two answers: its test format page says two years from the date the score report is issued, and its results page says five years. For Express Entry, IRCC says results must be less than two years old when you complete your profile and when you apply for permanent residence. For citizenship, IRCC asks for results even if they are expired. Read 15 October 2026.

How long does it take to get CELPIP results?

2 to 4 business days after the test, online in your CELPIP account, according to celpip.ca. The downloadable PDF is the official score report; paper reports have been discontinued. Read 15 October 2026.

What CELPIP score do I need for Canadian citizenship?

4 or higher in listening and speaking, for tests taken from 1 April 2014, if you are 18 to 54 on the day you apply. CELPIP-General LS, which tests only those two skills, is the version celpip.ca describes for citizenship, at $199 plus applicable taxes. Read on IRCC's and CELPIP's pages in October 2026.

How many questions do I need right for CELPIP 7?

About 27 to 31 of 38 in listening and 24 to 28 of 38 in reading, from celpip.ca's example charts. CELPIP says the raw score needed for a level varies slightly between test forms because of equating, and both tests include unscored questions you cannot tell apart from scored ones.
