This policy explains what personal data Kololingo collects, why we collect it, and who we share it with so we can run lessons, courses, and payments. We keep data collection to what the service actually needs.
1. Information we collect
- Account details — your name, email address, and password (or a Google/Apple sign-in), plus your role as a student or teacher.
- Profile and teaching data — for teachers, the bio, languages, availability, pricing, and the courses and materials you publish.
- Lesson activity — bookings, attendance, course progress, reviews, and the messages you send in lesson chat.
- Payment information — handled by our payment provider; we receive confirmation and records of a transaction, not your full card number. Teachers additionally provide payout destinations (such as a wallet address).
- Technical data — your timezone (so lesson times display correctly), session information to keep you logged in, and basic logs needed to operate and secure the service.
2. How we use your data
We use your information to create and secure your account, match students with teachers, run and schedule lessons, process payments and teacher payouts, show accurate times and progress, send you service emails such as receipts and lesson reminders, provide support, and detect abuse. We do not sell your personal data.
3. Providers we share data with
We share only what each provider needs to do its job on our behalf:
- Payments — a payment processor handles card payments securely so Kololingo never stores full card details.
- Sign-in — Google and Apple, if you choose to sign in with them.
- Lesson video — our real-time video provider powers the live lesson room.
- Email — an email provider delivers verification, receipts, reminders, and support messages.
- AI features — a third-party AI model powers in-lesson assistance and summaries (see below).
4. AI features
Some features use an AI model to support learning — for example summarising a lesson or generating practice material. Content processed this way is sent to our AI provider only to produce that result. AI output is a study aid and can be imperfect; it does not replace your teacher.
6. Retention
We keep your data for as long as your account is active and as long as we need it to provide the service, meet legal and accounting obligations, and resolve disputes. When it is no longer needed, we delete or anonymise it.
7. Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you can request access to your data, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to certain processing. You can edit much of your profile directly, and you can reach us through the support page to make a request.
8. Children
Kololingo is not directed at children who are below the age of digital consent in their country. If a younger learner uses Kololingo, it should be with a parent or guardian who manages the account.
