Skills for English SELT explained: taken outside the UK, pass or fail with no certificate, and an appeal that can cut both ways

Skills for English: SELT is PSI's Secure English Language Test for UK visa and immigration applications. It is computer-based, with no examiner or assessor in the room, and comes as a two-skill test (speaking and listening) or a four-skill test, at the level your application needs.

Everything below is from PSI's own Skills for English pages, the SELT page and the FAQ, read on 31 October 2026.

It is taken outside the UK

PSI says the test is taken at its Home Office-approved test centres in over 130 countries outside the UK. A result from abroad can be used for an application made from inside the UK, but if you are already in the UK, the test centre has to be somewhere else.

PSI's page notes that its centres in Afghanistan and Ukraine were closed when we read it. If you are in the UK, the providers with UK centres include Trinity and LanguageCert.

Which test, and how long it takes

PSI's SELT page matches each application to a test. The speaking and listening tests take 30 minutes for the family visa, Representative of an Overseas Business and International Sportsperson routes, 35 minutes for the family visa extension, and 50 minutes for settlement (ILR) and British citizenship.

The four-skill tests take 175 minutes for Skilled Worker, Health and Care, High Potential Individual and student visas below degree level, and 190 minutes for Minister of Religion, Innovator, Start-up and degree-level student visas. For Skilled Worker and High Potential Individual, the page notes the level became B2 from 8 January for first applications (previously B1).

From 26 March 2027, settlement moves to B2 speaking and listening on most routes (our UK guide). PSI's SELT page did not list a B2 speaking and listening test on 31 October 2026.

The result: pass or fail, and no certificate

Results are given only as Pass or Fail; PSI's FAQ says it cannot give a breakdown. No certificate is issued. You get a Unique Reference Number (URN) for each attempt, you put it on your application, and the Home Office uses it to find and verify your result.

PSI gives two timings. The SELT page says results are available in as little as 3 to 5 days. The FAQ says PSI aims for 14 days, with 28 days the maximum. If you have a deadline, plan for the FAQ's figure.

The result is valid for up to two years from the date it is issued, which is the same two-year rule the Home Office applies to SELTs.

Resits and appeals

You can book a resit as soon as you have the previous result. PSI recommends waiting at least 28 days, and there is no refund if you fail.

An appeal of the overall result must be made within 21 days and costs $130. PSI refunds the fee only if the result changes. It also says plainly that an appeal can change a result from Fail to Pass, or from Pass to Fail, or leave it as it is. Our reading: appealing a pass to look for a better result makes no sense here, because the only result is pass or fail and the appeal can take a pass away.

Bookings can be cancelled with a full refund more than 5 days ahead; less than 5 days before, there is no refund.

How it compares with the other SELTs

This comparison is ours. LanguageCert gives scores out of 100 and a test report showing each skill. Trinity gives a grade for each phase or skill and a digital certificate. PSI gives the least detail of the three, a pass or a fail and a reference number, so a fail tells you nothing about which skill to work on.

If you need to know where you lost marks, a practice test is the only feedback you will get before the real one. PSI publishes practice tests and a level finder on its site.

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Booking Skills for English: SELT at a centre in the UK.

Taking it at an approved centre outside the UK, or choosing a provider with UK centres.

PSI says its SELT centres are in over 130 countries outside the UK.

  • Waiting for a certificate before you apply.

Putting your Unique Reference Number on the application.

PSI issues no certificate; the Home Office verifies the result through the URN.

  • Appealing a pass to try for a better result.

Appealing only a fail you believe is wrong.

The result is only pass or fail, and PSI says an appeal can turn a pass into a fail.
