How much do Portuguese lessons cost?
Preply's own page lists native and non-native Portuguese speakers at exactly the same rate — $25 an hour each, which is unusual: in most languages the two differ, sometimes sharply.
The decision that will actually shape your learning is not the price. It is whether you learn Brazilian or European Portuguese, because they diverge more in speech than most learners expect and choosing by accident is expensive in time rather than money.

Brazilian or European: decide this first
Brazilian and European Portuguese share a written language and diverge considerably in the spoken one. European Portuguese reduces unstressed vowels heavily, which makes it markedly harder for beginners to segment; Brazilian Portuguese is more open and, for most learners, easier to hear early. Pronoun placement, common vocabulary and everyday idiom differ too.
Choose by where you will use it. Brazil, or Portugal and the Lusophone countries. If you have no destination, Brazilian Portuguese is the pragmatic default: there is far more of everything — teachers, media, music, subtitled television — and the sheer volume of exposure material matters more in the first year than any other factor on this page.
What it does not mean. They are not different languages and switching later is not starting over. A confident Brazilian-Portuguese speaker adapts to Lisbon with weeks of listening, not years. Do not let the choice paralyse you — just make it deliberately rather than by picking the cheapest tutor on a list.
The one figure we cannot explain
Preply's country table puts Mozambique highest at $32, above Portugal at $29, the United States at $26 and Brazil at $25.
Across the other languages we checked, these country figures track cost of living closely — Swiss German teachers at $49, Russian teachers in the United States at $38, Belarus at $22. Mozambique is one of the lowest-income countries in the world and sits at the top of its table, which that explanation cannot account for.
We do not know why, and we are not going to invent a reason. The most likely answer is thin data: Preply does not publish how many tutors sit behind each figure, and a country represented by a handful of specialist teachers can produce an average that means very little. That caveat applies to every country figure on every language page, not only this one.
We are flagging it rather than quietly leaving it out, because a price table that drops its inconvenient row is not worth trusting on the rows it keeps.
What actually moves your bill
Lesson length. Compare per hour. Platforms quote per lesson, per hour and per package, with lessons from 25 to 90 minutes.
Packages are the most reliable discount available, and where the expiry terms deserve the hardest read.
Exam preparation — CELPE-Bras for Brazil, CIPLE and the CAPLE levels for Portugal — prices above general conversation. Check which one your purpose actually requires; they are not interchangeable.
Where you are in the language. For English and Spanish speakers, Portuguese grammar is comparatively gentle and the listening is the wall. That makes early paid hours worth most when spent on ear training and speaking, and makes cheap conversation practice unusually good value once you are past the first few months.
The rate is per hour. The purchase often is not.
On Preply, lessons are bought as a subscription: its help centre states you are charged every 28 days for a fixed number of lessons, and that the renewal date is therefore not a fixed calendar date — its own example runs 1 January, 29 January, 26 February.
A 365-day year holds just over thirteen 28-day cycles, so a plan described in months bills thirteen times a year. That arithmetic is ours rather than a claim they make.
And the help centre states plan lessons do not carry over and expire at renewal, while separately bought extra lessons survive two cycles. Cost per lesson actually taken is what you should be comparing.
What we do, and where we are worse

Where that is worse. No trial lesson means no cheap way to sample, and in Portuguese sampling matters more than usual, because you are also testing whether you can follow that teacher's variety and speed.
