Brazilian vs European Portuguese: which one should you learn?
They are one language, and a Brazilian and a Lisboner understand each other. But the gap is wider than British versus American English — closer to the distance between Scottish and Texan speech, and it shows up first in the sound, not the grammar.
Choose before you pick a teacher. Switching later is easy; learning both at once early is confusing.
Pronunciation is the real divide
European Portuguese swallows unstressed vowels, which makes it sound clipped and consonant-heavy to a beginner. Brazilian keeps them open, which is why most learners find it dramatically easier to hear at the start.

You versus you
Brazil mostly uses você and conjugates it like the third person, which quietly removes a whole verb form for learners. Portugal uses tu with its own conjugation, and reserves você for a formality level that can even sound cold.

So which one?
Pick Brazilian if your reason is travel to Brazil, work with Brazilian colleagues, music or television — and if you simply want the easier entry, because the clearer vowels make listening far less painful for the first six months. Pick European if you are moving to Portugal, have family there, or need it for residency and paperwork.
Whichever you choose, learn it from a teacher of that variety. A Brazilian teacher will not reliably prepare you for a Lisbon pharmacy, and the reverse is just as true.

Will Portuguese people understand Brazilian Portuguese?
Easily — Brazilian television and music are widely consumed in Portugal, so exposure runs strongly in that direction. The reverse is harder: Brazilians often report struggling with European Portuguese at first, precisely because of the swallowed vowels.
Does Spanish help?
A great deal for reading and vocabulary, less than you would hope for listening, and it actively hurts your accent early on. Portuguese has nasal vowels and a rhythm Spanish does not, and the most common giveaway of a Spanish speaker learning Portuguese is importing Spanish vowels wholesale.
