The same exam costs 2.8 times as much depending on where you sit it

Two of the exam bodies documented on this site price one exam differently in every country and publish the whole list — but not on the page that describes the exam. ETS puts the TOEFL price behind a select your testing location box; siele.org shows the SIELE price only once a country has been chosen on the booking form. Both lists were read in full on 11 September 2026 and are printed below, unchanged, under CC0.

TOEFL iBT: 212 countries and territories, from US$170 in Nigeria and Ukraine to US$475 in Switzerland; US$255 is the most common price, charged in 50 countries. SIELE Global: 85 countries priced in euros, from 135 € in Honduras, India, Indonesia, Nigeria and Philippines to 175 € in Australia, Israel and Switzerland, plus the United States and Brazil in dollars and China in yuan. The scoring is identical everywhere; only the address changes.

The comparison is ours; the prices are theirs. India and Nigeria sit in the cheapest tier of both lists and Switzerland tops both. In between, the bodies part company. Japan (165 € SIELE, US$195 TOEFL) and Ukraine (165 € SIELE, US$170 TOEFL) are in SIELE’s upper tier while paying almost the TOEFL minimum. Croatia (145 € SIELE, US$313 TOEFL) and Estonia (145 € SIELE, US$310 TOEFL) pay SIELE’s most common price and over US$300 for the TOEFL. Whatever each body is pricing — local income, local centre costs, local demand — it is not the same thing.

The TOEFL’s spread is also simply wider: 2.8 to 1 against SIELE’s 1.3 to 1. A third body prices this way, Turkey’s Yunus Emre Enstitüsü, whose TYS table of fifty-seven countries is read in the TYS guide. Every other exam on this site either publishes one national price or none at all; the postures are compared in the exam comparison.

What the tables do not settle is whether you may register in a cheaper country than the one you live in. ETS and SIELE each have rules on that, and this page quotes prices, not eligibility.

The TOEFL rows are the contents of the file ETS’s fees page loads to answer its own location selector, read on 11 September 2026. The SIELE rows were read on siele.org’s booking page by selecting each of its 95 countries in turn, the same day. Nothing was converted between currencies; each row is in the currency the body charges. The extremes, the mode and the disagreement section are computed from the rows when this page is built, so they cannot drift from the table.

Until 11 September 2026 this site recorded both exams as publishing no fee, because their information pages carry none. The correction is stated on the two exam guides, TOEFL and SIELE, rather than patched silently. Prices move; the date is part of the fact.
