CERT.IT explained: Roma Tre's Italian certificate, the B1 for citizenship, a pass mark that adds three skills together, and the 2027 dates

CERT.IT (written Certit by its makers) is the Italian certificate of Università Roma Tre, recognised by Italy's foreign and education ministries. It is the fourth of Italy's CLIQ certificates, alongside the CILS, the CELI and the PLIDA, and it covers all six levels, A1 to C2.

Roma Tre's B1 page points to the B1 requirement for Italian citizenship which its page dates to Decree no. 132 of 1 December 2018, and says applicants hand in a certificate from the certifying body. Everything below is from Roma Tre's certification site, its 2027 calendar and its list of partner centres abroad, read on 2 November 2026.

The pass rule: three skills added together, speaking on its own

The CERT.IT B1 has four parts: listening, reading and writing, 90 minutes in all, and a 10-minute speaking test face to face.

You pass with 60% of the combined score of listening, reading and writing, and 60% in speaking. There is no separate minimum for each of the first three. A strong listening and reading paper can carry a weaker piece of writing, as long as the three together reach 60%. Speaking cannot be carried by anything.

Our reading: this is the opposite of the PLIDA, which needs 18 of 30 in every skill (see PLIDA explained). If one skill is clearly your weakest, the CERT.IT rule is the more forgiving of the two.

The writing tasks are short: Roma Tre's sample asks for messages of 50 to 80 words, such as a complaint about a late, broken phone. Speaking has three parts: introductions, a polite complaint to a neighbour, and a voice message changing plans with a friend.

On paper or on screen

At Roma Tre in Rome, the B1 and B2 are sat on computer. At the partner centres, they are on paper. All the other levels are on paper everywhere. The speaking test is always in person and recorded.

Dates for 2027

A2 and B1: 11 February, 20 May and 6 October 2027, three dates in the year. Registration opens on 4 January, 23 March and 26 August respectively.

B2: 16 March, 22 June and 18 November 2027. C1 and C2: 6 April 2027. A1: 18 November 2027.

For comparison, the PLIDA has four B1 dates in 2026 and the CILS B1 Cittadinanza six (see CILS or CELI for citizenship).

Fees and how to register

To sit it in Rome, you register on Roma Tre's student portal (GOMP), book the exam, upload your ID and Italian tax code (codice fiscale), and pay through PagoPA. The B1 costs €80 (A1 €35, A2 €40, B2 €140, C1 and C2 €200). Roma Tre says payments are not refunded.

From B2 up, you can sit single sections at a section price; for the B1, Roma Tre lists no section prices.

At a partner centre, you register and pay with that centre, which sets its own terms.

Sitting it outside Italy

Roma Tre's December 2025 list of partner centres abroad covers 12 countries: Argentina, Australia, Benin, Brazil, Cameroon, China, Côte d'Ivoire, the United Kingdom, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Africa, Togo and Tunisia.

That is a much shorter list than the PLIDA's 300-plus centres in over 60 countries. If none of the 12 countries is yours, the PLIDA or the CILS is the practical route abroad.

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Assuming CERT.IT, like the PLIDA, needs a pass in every skill.

Knowing that listening, reading and writing are added together, with 60% to pass, and speaking needs 60% on its own.

That is Roma Tre's stated pass rule for the B1.

  • Planning to sit the B1 abroad in any country.

Checking Roma Tre's list of partner centres first.

Its December 2025 list covers 12 countries outside Italy.
