How much do Hungarian lessons cost?
Preply's own Hungarian tutors page, read on 22 October 2026, says its Hungarian tutors charge between $9 and $98 an hour, with an average of $28. Native speakers are listed at $25 and non-native at $20.
The widest spread on the page is not native against non-native but country against country: a tutor born in Serbia averages $19, one born in Hungary $25. And the page's structured data, the numbers search engines read, gives a higher average again: $41.
What Preply's Hungarian page says, read on 22 October 2026
The range and the average. "Our tutors' prices per hour range between $9 and $98 dollars, with an average price of $28 per hour."
By the tutor's country of birth: Hungary $25, Romania $23, Serbia $19, Ukraine $20 an hour.
Native against non-native: native Hungarian speakers $25 an hour, non-native $20.
Structured data for search engines: "$23/hr to $59/hr (avg: $41/hr)", against the $28 average printed for readers on the same page.
The tutor cards are personalised by location: from our address in Denmark they quoted kronor per 50-minute lesson.
Why Romania, Serbia and Ukraine are on the list
All three of Hungary's neighbours named in the table have long-established Hungarian-speaking communities, so many tutors born there are native speakers of Hungarian who live outside Hungary. A $19 Serbia-born tutor may well speak Hungarian as a first language.
So the cheaper rows are mostly geography, not quality. They track the cost of living where the teacher lives, which is the same pattern we found in Finnish and Greek.
Two averages on one page
Preply's Hungarian page prints $28 as its average for readers, while its structured data says $41. We do not know why they differ, and we are not suggesting either is wrong. The practical point: an average quoted in a search result or an AI answer may not be the one on the page. Open the page before you budget.
Greek, Czech and Romanian show the same split on the same day; the four are side by side in our lesson-price research.
If you need Hungarian for citizenship
Hungary's ordinary naturalisation includes an exam on the constitution, in Hungarian, written and oral on one day, pass or fail, and the simplified route has no exam at all; both are in our Hungarian citizenship guide. Preparation for that exam is a specialty of its own: two of the first three Hungarian tutor cards on Preply's page advertise citizenship preparation.
The rate is per hour. The purchase often is not.
On Preply, lessons are bought as a subscription. Its help centre states you are charged automatically every 28 days for a fixed number of lessons, and that plan lessons not booked before the end of the cycle expire at renewal. Compare on cost per lesson actually taken.
What we do, and where we are worse
We run a marketplace for language teachers, so we are not neutral. There is no subscription and no billing cycle, the wallet is 1:1 in US dollars with no expiry, and package terms are snapshotted at purchase. There is no unpaid-trial mechanic.
Where that is worse. No cheap way to sample a teacher, and we just launched, with far less choice of Hungarian teachers than a site that has run for a decade. We do not print our own prices: teachers set and change them.
Mistakes worth avoiding
Reading a cheaper Serbia- or Romania-born tutor as a non-native one.
Checking the profile, since many are native Hungarian speakers.
Preply's country table is by country of birth, and Hungary's neighbours have Hungarian-speaking communities.
