The DCL FLE explained: one 2h30 case study, a level from A2 to C1, 100 euros, and a diploma that does not expire

The DCL (diplôme de compétence en langue) is a national diploma of France's Ministry of Education, not of France Éducation international, which runs the TCF, DELF and DALF. The French version is the DCL FLE (français langue étrangère). It is little known abroad and widely used in France, in GRETA adult-education centres and job training.

Everything below is from the ministry's candidate page and the 2025/2026 session calendar in the Bulletin officiel no. 45 of 27 November 2025, both read on 7 November 2026.

One exam, and the result sets your level

You do not choose a level when you register. Everyone sits the same exam, and the jury awards a level of the Common European Framework from A2 to C1 according to what you did. The ministry puts it as une seule et même épreuve pour tous, un résultat en fonction de la performance.

The exam lasts 2 hours 30 minutes and is a case study built on a work scenario: you read documents, listen to recordings, process the information, present your conclusions, defend them when questioned, and write a summary. Reading, listening, speaking, interaction and writing are all assessed inside that one task.

You are marked on two things: whether your communication got the job done, and the quality of your French. A jury of inspectors, university staff and examiners decides. You see the level and a detailed skills profile online, and the rectorate sends the diploma signed by the recteur without you asking for it.

Fee, validity and who can sit it

The registration fee is 100 euros. The ministry states it on the candidate page.

The diploma has unlimited validity (sa durée de validité est illimitée). It is registered in France Compétences' Répertoire spécifique.

There is no condition of nationality, previous diploma or job. Pupils, employees, jobseekers, trainees, students and private individuals can all register.

The exam is held in approved centres across mainland France and the overseas departments: GRETA, universities, some state schools and approved private operators. Each academy publishes which languages it offers.

The 2026 sessions

The Bulletin officiel sets three DCL FLE sessions in 2026:

  • 16 March 2026registration 1 Nov 2025 – 16 Jan 2026
  • 15 June 2026registration 1 Dec 2025 – 15 Apr 2026
  • 7 December 2026registration 1 Feb – 7 Oct 2026 (closed)

Cancelled sessions, the 2027 dates, and the DCL FP

A session can be cancelled if too few people register; registrations then move to the next one. The 2026/2027 calendar was not yet in the Bulletin officiel when we looked; the last two were published in November.

There is also a DCL Français professionnel de premier niveau (FP): a 1h30 exam that awards A1 or A2 only.

DCL FLE and French nationality

The ministry says the DCL FLE and DCL FP let foreign nationals have their French level officially recognised by the Interior Ministry, and that the DCL FLE covers B2, the level needed for French nationality.

Our reading: since 1 January 2026 the nationality rules accept two kinds of proof of B2, a diploma or a TCF/TEF test attestation, and only the attestation expires after two years; see France now asks for B2. The DCL is a diploma with unlimited validity, so a DCL FLE at B2 belongs on the diploma side. Because the exam awards whatever level you reach, you only know you have B2 when the result comes. Confirm with your préfecture before you rely on it.

For the better-known diplomas, see DELF and DALF levels explained.

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Registering for "the B2 DCL".

Registering for the DCL FLE and preparing for the level you need.

There is one exam for everyone; the jury sets the level from A2 to C1 from your performance.

  • Preparing for separate reading, listening and writing papers.

Practising one work scenario from documents to spoken conclusions to a written summary.

The DCL is a single 2h30 case study that assesses all the skills together.

  • Waiting for the December session in October.

Checking the registration window months ahead.

Registration for the 7 December 2026 session closed on 7 October 2026.
