How much do Danish lessons cost?

Preply's own Danish tutors page, read on 23 October 2026, says its Danish tutors charge between $15 and $100 an hour, with an average of $49. That is the highest printed average of the Nordic languages we have read there: the Norwegian and Swedish pages both printed $39 when we read them on 9 October.

If you live in Denmark, read the next section first. The state Danish programme costs most learners nothing but a refundable deposit.

Before you pay anyone, including us

Adult foreigners in Denmark are referred by their municipality to the Danish Language Education Programme (danskuddannelse) at a language centre. The City of Copenhagen's page, read on 23 October 2026, says it "is free, if you are referred from July 1st. 2020 and onwards", but that "you need to make a deposit of 2.000 DKK, before you can start your class". Your language centre tells you how and when the deposit is paid back.

People in an integration programme and au pairs pay no deposit, and someone in an integration programme is eligible for free courses for up to 5 years. The programme has three courses (Danish Education 1, 2 and 3), each of six modules, and you are placed by your education and your English.

That is the cheapest route by far. Private lessons earn their price on top of it: for speaking time the classroom cannot give, for a schedule around shift work, or for the exam you need next.

What Preply's Danish page says, read on 23 October 2026

The range and the average. "Our tutors' prices range between $15 and $100 dollars per hour, with an average price of $49 per hour."

By the tutor's country of birth: Denmark $50, United Kingdom $46, Canada $62, India $49 an hour.

Native against non-native: native Danish speakers $50 an hour, non-native $46. A small gap, unlike Finnish, where the same comparison on Preply ran at more than double.

Structured data for search engines reads "$35/hr to $100/hr (avg: $54/hr)", a higher average than the one printed for readers. We found the same pattern on Preply's Greek, Czech, Hungarian and Romanian pages (our lesson-price research).

Why Danish costs more than its neighbours

This is our reading, not Preply's. Most Danish tutors live in Denmark and price for Danish wages and costs, and the pool is small. The country table shows it: even tutors born in India average $49, close to the Danish-born $50, which suggests a market price for Danish rather than a discount by location.

The dates differ: Danish read on 23 October, Norwegian and Swedish on 9 October. Averages on these pages move between reads, so treat the gap as a direction, not a fixed number.

If you need Danish for residence or citizenship

Citizenship asks for Prøve i Dansk 3 and, separately, the citizenship test (indfødsretsprøven): 36 of 45 right, including 4 of the 5 questions on Danish values. SIRI lists the 2026 fees as 1,646 kroner for PD3 as a self-study candidate and 946 kroner for the citizenship test. Both are in our guide to Danish citizenship.

Exam preparation is usually priced above conversation. Find out what the exam contains first, so you pay for the part you cannot do alone.

The rate is per hour. The purchase often is not.

On Preply, lessons are bought as a subscription. Its help centre states you are charged automatically every 28 days for a fixed number of lessons, and that plan lessons not booked before the end of the cycle expire at renewal. Compare on cost per lesson actually taken.

What we do, and where we are worse

We run a marketplace for language teachers, so we are not neutral. There is no subscription and no billing cycle, the wallet is 1:1 in US dollars with no expiry, and package terms are snapshotted at purchase. There is no unpaid-trial mechanic: the first lesson is paid at the teacher's normal rate.

Where that is worse. No cheap way to sample a teacher, and we just launched, with far less choice of Danish teachers than a site that has run for a decade. We do not print our own prices: teachers set and change them.

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Paying for private Danish lessons before asking your municipality about the language centre.

Getting referred to the Danish Language Education Programme first.

The City of Copenhagen states the programme is free for anyone referred from 1 July 2020, after a 2,000 DKK deposit; people in an integration programme and au pairs pay no deposit.

  • Budgeting from an average quoted in a search result.

Opening the page and reading the figure printed for readers.

Preply's Danish page, read on 23 October 2026, prints an average of $49 an hour while its structured data says $54.

  • Expecting a non-native Danish teacher to cost far less.

Choosing by what you need explained.

Preply lists native Danish speakers at $50 an hour and non-native at $46, a gap of $4.
