How much do Croatian lessons cost?

Preply's own Croatian tutors page, read on 23 October 2026, says its Croatian tutors charge between $8 and $100 an hour, with an average of $31. On the same page, native Croatian speakers average $33 an hour and non-native speakers $14, more than double.

That is one of the widest native gaps we have read on Preply, and it runs the opposite way from Greek, where non-native teachers were listed as dearer. What it means for your budget is below.

What Preply's Croatian page says, read on 23 October 2026

The range and the average. "Our tutors' prices range between $8 and $100 dollars per hour, with an average price of $31 per hour."

By the tutor's country of birth: Croatia $32, Bosnia and Herzegovina $33, Serbia $26, Poland $13 an hour.

Native against non-native: native Croatian speakers $33 an hour, non-native $14.

Structured data for search engines reads "$28/hr to $40/hr (avg: $34/hr)": a narrower range and a higher average than the one printed for readers. We found the same split on five other Preply language pages (our lesson-price research).

Why the native gap is so wide here

This is our reading, not Preply's. Croatian, Bosnian and Serbian are close enough that many native speakers of one teach another, and the country table shows tutors born in Bosnia and Herzegovina pricing like Croatians ($33) while Serbia-born tutors sit lower ($26). The $14 non-native figure sits next to a $13 Poland row, which suggests the non-native group is priced at other countries' levels; the page does not show who is in it or how many.

For a beginner that cheaper group can be the right buy: someone who learned Croatian's seven cases as an adult can explain them from the outside, in your language. For pronunciation, accent and the language people actually speak in Split or Zagreb, pay for the native ear.

If you need Croatian for citizenship

Croatian naturalisation asks for the Croatian language and the Latin script, Croatian culture and the social order. The language is proved with a document; culture and the social order are tested with a 15-question questionnaire at the police administration. Both are set out from the official gazette in our Croatian citizenship guide.

Exam and document preparation is usually priced above conversation. Find out what the proof requires first, so you pay for the part you cannot do alone.

The rate is per hour. The purchase often is not.

On Preply, lessons are bought as a subscription. Its help centre states you are charged automatically every 28 days for a fixed number of lessons, and that plan lessons not booked before the end of the cycle expire at renewal. Compare on cost per lesson actually taken.

What we do, and where we are worse

We run a marketplace for language teachers, so we are not neutral. There is no subscription and no billing cycle, the wallet is 1:1 in US dollars with no expiry, and package terms are snapshotted at purchase. There is no unpaid-trial mechanic: the first lesson is paid at the teacher's normal rate.

Where that is worse. No cheap way to sample a teacher, and we just launched, with far less choice of Croatian teachers than a site that has run for a decade. We do not print our own prices: teachers set and change them.

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Reading the $31 average as what a native Croatian teacher costs.

Reading the native and non-native rows separately.

Preply's Croatian page, read on 23 October 2026, lists native speakers at $33 an hour and non-native at $14; the average mixes both.

  • Budgeting from an average quoted in a search result.

Opening the page and reading the figure printed for readers.

The same page prints an average of $31 an hour for readers while its structured data says $34, with a range of $28 to $40 instead of $8 to $100.
